Learning to Love Myself

Happy Friday Readers!

I've just realised that this blog is almost FOUR years old! Wow!

I feel as if these past four years have brought amazing growth, and so many opportunities to improve on myself. Before starting this blog, I hated being photographed- I always felt that I was not photogenic and looked really awful in photos. I understand that this emanated from self image issues, and so much more.
As a start, part of my growth through this blog was to become comfortable with being photographed, and accepting who I was on the outside. It also took a lot to click 'PUBLISH' on my first post, it was as if I was not comfortable sharing anything of myself with the world.
I look back at a few of my first posts, and while the writing has changed, more real, as I became more comfortable with sharing my words, I also no longer cringed when looking at photos of myself. I still don't particularly think that I look drop dead gorgeous in photos, but at least I don't want to crawl under a rock every time I look at a photo of myself. I suppose everyone has those days where there may be bad photos, and I have made peace with that. And I don't even mind those terrible photos being seen/ posted anymore, it's just a moment in time anyway.

Most people who have known me most of my life, will testify that I am pretty confident, an overall achiever and always happy. I performed exceptionally well in my studies, while being married and nurturing a growing family. I tackled my career, while studying and did it all in my stride, and made it all look really easy. It was however unbelievably hard work, but my inherent personality would not allow me to take a moment to even feel the strain. I just powered on for years, climbing the corporate ladder, raising 3 kids, running my home... all while studying for various degrees. There was no time for me to reflect on anything, except what was happening, and with the never ending support of my partner and rock, I made it through in one piece.
I was 'forced' through ill health to exit my career, the first step to this empowered version of me. Over the last few years, I have had to examine my motivation for the need to constantly excel, to be everything to everyone, and to make it look effortless. I have realised how so much of my childhood trauma still sat in my present and influenced my behaviours. Without going into too much detail around my personal process, I learnt the significant distinction between confidence (which I possessed in abundance) and self esteem (which I lacked). I learnt that my childhood had stripped my self esteem and in order to refill it and feed it, I excelled at everything I attempted. Without this awareness, the cycle continued, and while my self esteem was at a low, I continued to outperform (in life generally) but was never satisfied that it was enough. And so I would seize the next challenge and master it, and when it was conquered, not really feel the sense of accomplishment.
I have learnt through intense personal work, that I don't need to excel at everything, and I don't need to make it look simple. I don't need to always look and be perfect for anyone but myself. I accept that my accomplishments are for myself and not to fill an empty childhood void, and I am now able to value my achievements for the diligence and commitment with which I pursue my ambitions.
I am now able to accept myself, warts and all, understand my weaknesses; and celebrate and value my strengths.

I am able to love myself, and accept the authentic love showered on me.

Today's post is a work look for me, one I wouldn't have worn in my corporate job a short few years ago. I planned on wearing my corporate formal trousers which I would would usually wear with this blazer, but it somehow didn't feel like me anymore. I can no longer relate to the woman I was when I wore those outfits - I now no longer wear what is considered appropriate but what I feel is appropriate for me.
So a t-shirt and ripped jeans with the blazer, and even the turban would not have been worn by the 'old' me. I am proud of how far I have come and overcoming childhood demons which walked with me each day.

3 Classic Winter essentials and buying guide

Welcome back and Hello to new readers!

Winter is suddenly upon us (again) and Capetonians go scrambling from their light layers to coats, knits and boots. Shortly after organising my closet for Winter; and then after a warm respite, having to dig into those warmer winter pieces again. Ahhh, the joys of living in Cape Town means not being sure when the warm weather has actually left us. As I’m writing this the wind is howling and I have a view of the mountain blanketed in ominous dark clouds.

I have a few Winter favourites which have been in my closet for a good couple of years and the great thing is that they are still trendy and on point. This helps as I usually don’t have to buy so many pieces, which is especially important as a mum, where one has to constantly buy clothes for rapidly growing kids. I find winter to be an expensive season to shop for, the leather boots, good quality coats and knits and sweats. I am fussy with my knits as they need to retain shape, and look good for a while. Since we experience very wet winters, I prefer my boots to be good quality leather, this has paid off for me as some pieces in my collection of leather boots have been in my closet for more than seven years! I just add a new pair if I feel I’d like to update what I currently have. This is a more cost effective way of updating my winter wardrobe as I do not have to spend on several pairs of boots each year.

Essential pieces for Winter and shopping guidelines:

  1. A good quality trench coat - Ensure that the cut is classic, take note of buttons and belt placement. Plain buttons are best as they are classic and timeless, with a length preferably just below or on the knee for a classic cut. The classic Burberry trench is always finished off with a single back vent.
  2. Good pair of leather heeled ankle boots - these can be worn for office wear as well as casually on weekends. A medium height chunky heel works well for comfort and timeless elegance. Stacked heels are so on trend right now as well, so it’s easy to find. Look for good leather, with toned down accents- if the accents are too gold, or with big buckles, it will date very quickly.
  3. Classic knits - there are a variety of knits available in stores right now. From cotton knit to cable knits, crop tops and oversized knits. The main factor for me with knits is that they retain shape, breathe well and do not develop little balls of fluff on them. These can be avoided by buying natural fibres such as wool blends (wool percentage greater than 50%) and cotton blends. Cashmere is first prize, but so costly and not readily available.
Good luck!

Todays outfit features a Trenery trench coat I have had for over six years, and when I bought it initially it was extremely heavy on the wallet as they weren’t available in many stores. However, years down the line  it has proven to be a gem in my closet. The boots are last season from Mimco and handbag from Country Road.

Colour of love OOTD

Welcome lovelies!

This week provided some relief from the intense heat, and we welcomed some much needed rain.
(I offer up a prayer of gratitude and thanks).
On that note of thanks, I have decided to make today’s topic for some inspiration, LOVE. In all its shapes and forms, it is as essential for life as breathing. I don’t only refer to romantic love, but self love,  sibling love, parental love, love of anything which makes one happy. It is proven that if we concentrate on those things in life which bring us happiness, we will be happier. And what will lead from happiness is love, it will emanate from your being and will be a tangible feeling that can be felt around you, thereby radiating positive energy. And whatever you send out into the universe, will come around; you will be loved in return.
The journey starts with self love, not vanity, it starts at the point where we decide to value ourselves. As parents we place ultimate importance on the fact that our children should have high self esteem, confidence and enough self awareness to be well functioning adults (especially in our superficial society). We focus on their development, sometimes to the detriment of our own progress. Life is not static, so emotions and feelings change all the time, this means that as adults we too need to constantly develop self esteem, confidence and self awareness. Trials and tribulations thrown at us will change our path, can throw us off balance and result in compromised self esteem and confidence. The only solution is to get up, reroute and face in a new direction. Rebuild that self esteem and confidence; and the belief in yourself will propel you forward.
When we focus on positivity, we attract positivity…
So let’s go out there and spread some love, it can be in the form of a hug, a heartfelt thank you or just a smile. The world will be a better place when our theme is positive, it will be a better place when we stop looking into other gardens instead of our own.
PEACE.
And in today’s monochrome lookpost I’ve included the colour of love to pop! the outfit.
Red represents love, passion, energy and motivates action.
These pieces are all from last Winter, and will continue as staples in my wardrobe.
Remember, now that we have the January sales in full force, that smart shopping is essential. Pay higher prices for classics made with good fabrics, and lesser for high fashion trendy pieces.

Longline Sweat OOTD

Dear Readers,
Another week gone by, and hopefully everyone has reached the goals set or at least made it count. Staying focussed on your course is hard in this life of social media (read time thief), demands from outside influences all calling for your attention. With some really sad news this week, I was shocked back into the reality of the importance of taking care of oneself. This Women's month I have touched on many aspects of female empowerment, strength and the general issues which affect us. It is important to be vigilant with your body, listen to it, as any extreme stress you experience will manifest in some kind of illness.

Be Aware. Be Careful. Take regular time outs.
As nurturers and caretakers, women multi task on a daily basis, they take care of families, hold down demanding careers, fill the role of loving spouses and at the end of of all this, if we neglect ourselves, we break a little each day. While Women's Month is drawing to an end, this just means the public awareness will end, but let the self awareness continue.
Be Aware. Be Kind to yourself. Take regular time outs.

Today's OOTD is a casual one, reflective of time out in the garden. I love nature and being in my garden, pottering about with the flowers, relaxes my mind. The Winter sun is not so harsh, and I love the gentle warmth while pruning rose bushes and trimming creepers. It may be a small respite from the madness, but I feel a little more centred after time in nature, and ready to pick up the never ending to do list.
All pieces in this outfit are recent purchases on the Woolworths SA sale and can be taken into Spring, I usually find my sneakers in the junior section (they cost less then- score!)

Have a good weekend, and ladies... try to take that essential time out. xx

Leather, lace and Stripes

Hi again readers,

And so the end of the fast has come to an end and I can't help but feel sad, for the tranquillity this month has afforded me. Sad for the moments of reflection, the rewarding feeling of being mindful of and participating in the increased charity this month and the special times spent in prayer with my family. With each year that passes I feel as if I have made great progress on my path to a better me and Ramadaan is the time that I make the most progress. So before I get back on the roller coaster of normal life, where the schedule is crazy and the pace chaotic, I'd like to pause and appreciate the time I have been gifted. I trust that everyone has found that inner peace, and had a rewarding and blessed month, culminating in a wonderful celebration of Eid tomorrow.
Eid Mubarak!
I feel as if I have been in hibernation, venturing out on essential errands only and keeping up to date with news via occasional visits to social media. By next week I will be longing for this time holed up at home with nothing to do but spend time with the kids and cook and in prayer. The cold weather seems to be encroaching and I will be back on the frosty soccer field every Saturday morning ... So by next week, I will feel as if this past month has been little more than a dream, or I may not even have the time to think of it with the return to being busy mom.
One thing, I'm really happy to be returning to normal, healthy eating patterns...

And onto today's look, typical relaxed look and perfect to run that quick errand. This dress is actually a Forever New summer piece, which I chose to layer with leather look leggings and a leather jacket. I absolutely love leather jackets and have quite a collection to choose from, the great thing is that they have all been good buys from diverse stores. My gifted handbag, Mango flats and the formerly Bespoke Hijabi scarf finish the look.
