Autumn layering

Hi lovelies, 

Autumn is here, and with it comes cooler air, comfort meals and fashion layering. I am a summer creature by nature and enjoy the outdoors, the sea air and picnics with the family. We have been lucky to still have some warm weather, but occasionally the odd Autumn day creeps up on you. 

This week has been much better for me, my firstborn is back home and the holidays have been enjoyable with a few birthday celebrations. My world is spinning on an even axis again and I feel more grounded. It’s funny how a missing family member creates such a void in the home and in your daily life, that everything feels off kilter. And whilst he may have had a fantastic time touring Holland and Belgium, one can see the relief on his face to be in his own space again. And the siblings too, seem to be more balanced and back their usual selves. Happiness!

Today's post is an introduction to Autumn layering, featuring the essential white shirt (always a staple in any wardrobe) paired with the parka, also seeing a comeback this season. The statement patterned Chuck Taylors, finishes off the laid back casual look.

Free Spirit

Hello lovelies!

The fast is almost at an end, and I am happy to say that I have accomplished all I wanted. It's the first Ramadan that I am at home and able to spend the time exactly as I planned it.

Being a stay-at-home mum has been amazing, although I suspect that after the fast, I will start to feel restless with the need to be doing ME things ( i.e. not mommy duties, or wife duties, or homemaker duties) :-)

I have been blessed with the ability to pursue so many other things... things I would not have been able to do whilst working.

One of the most challenging projects has been my sewing and design classes. It has given me a new appreciation for a fine garment, made in an exquisite fabric. I have never been good at needlework, and even dropped it at high school, but I have always been interested in fashion, always wanting unique and unusual pieces. I would therefore alter some items myself (by hand) whether to bead, embroider or change it up. So it made perfect sense that I would purchase a sewing machine and enrol for classes, right? It's not important that I had no idea how to operate a sewing machine, or cut on a pattern, or even alter something! But, I have learnt and am still learning as I go along....

So I feel the need to acknowledge, Abashiya Achilles (there are many others I'm sure), the lady behind Fabulous in Hijab (Check out her FB page here), who made me this lovely leather-look maxi tube skirt. All the hard work, and time behind the sewing machine is now something I can relate to, although I doubt I will enter the realm of garment manufacturing!

I paired the skirt with the Free Spirit, Quirky Stylista top and one of my favourite Converse sneakers, for a chilled look.

Wearing Fabulous in Hijab

Hello lovelies!

It's been a crazy two weeks with birthdays, Father's Day, and my mum leaving for umrah (visit to Mecca).

So we decided to go really low key for hubby's birthday which coincided with Fathers Day. Of course the kids treated him to his traditional Sunday morning breakfast of coffee and koeksisters (in bed). I love special occasions, as I enjoy buying gifts and seeing the reaction when you give them. The joy on the recipients face is priceless and warms my heart. This is why I plan gifts way in advance, part of the organiser in me, I suppose, and the need for everything to be just right.

He could then choose what he wanted to do for his birthday, and he decided on a lunch at CTFM with us (kids and me). And later, coffee and cake with our siblings and parents at our place. A simple but thoroughly enjoyable day, and because he's always hectically busy at work, it was great for him to just take it easy.

So in the spirit of relaxation, I donned my Fabulous in Hijab maxi with a hint of shimmer and a pair of polka dot Chuck Taylor's.
