Happy/Sad VS OOTD

Dear readers,

The day has dawned where I have to send my firstborn off into the big wide world, to spend two weeks a couple of thousand kilometers away! As a parent, I realise that these moments are inevitable, it just creeps up on one way too fast. But I will be strong, and this will be good for him. He will learn new things and how to cope on his own, he will absorb new cultures and experience playing sport as an ambassador for his school. I CAN do this, he CAN do this!

Today also happens to be my baby’s 11th birthday, talk about an eventful day :-D It really warmed my heart to see Ziyaad give his baby brother a special birthday gift, as a consolation for departing ON this special day. Such little moments of thoughtfulness are rare, especially with a home full of sparring boys. At times like this I feel as if I have done things right with these little people, so I’m savouring this feeling for now. Until the next row breaks out (sigh)

On farewell:

I stroke your cheek

Once so smooth and now corrupted

By little invasive fuzziness.

I imagine the days of catering to your every single basic need,

To feeding you, changing you, reading to you,

I imagine all your first moments,

And it dawns on me that this will be added to that library of firsts.

Your first solo trip abroad,

My heart skips a beat just thinking of it.

I will not let the little droplets betray my anguish,

I will not let the salty trail find its way down my cheeks,

I will smile, I will be brave and send you on your way.

I will send a piece of my heart on its way,

To dwell in hostels and sports fields.

And trust that it will return stronger, grown up and still filled with love.

What I wore: Eid-ul-Adha

Assalaamu Alaykum readers,

Today I have greeted in arabic as this post touches on a very special topic and a journey I yearn to make. This particular Eid is to celebrate the pilgrimage which all Muslims have to undertake as one of the pillars of our religion. Last night we visited a friend who has just returned, and she was so inspiring and frank about her whole experience. I left with a warm glow of appreciation for what I can only imagine to be one of the biggest life changing journeys. One can’t help but feel spiritually enlightened just by sharing in a pilgrim’s (hadjie) tale of utter joy and awe.

We celebrate the hadj journey in solidarity with our pilgrims on Eid-ul-Adha, a day spent with family and sometimes performing the ritual sacrifice of sheep or oxen. On days like these, I feel blessed to spend time with family, for the abundance of food and the ease with which we are able to practice our beliefs.

Here are some pics of the day, and my little nuclear family. The mornings are always busy with me in the kitchen preparing Eid lunch, so I have a comfortable but presentable outfit for when I need to greet guests.

Birthday Animal Print

Hi Lovely readers,

My birthday has come and gone, and I usually choose not to fuss too much about it as my eldest has a birthday a mere three days after mine. After my illness though, hubby decided he would fuss, and he’s such a honey he arranged a few spoils without me needing to lift a finger! One of them was our dinner at Baia at the Waterfront, our all time favourite seafood place.

Since I was still in recovery mode, I have not shot any lookposts recently and this was the first in a long time. This animal print coat (it’s actually a lightweight jacket which is perfect for the in between weather we are experiencing now) has been dying to come out and be worn! Thus a lookpost was born, despite me feeling slightly under the weather at the time.

This jacket is the perfect style and length and fabric to see regular wear in any modest fashionistas closet. I have paired it with a cream boyfriend jeans and my peach suede rose gold toe cap heels.

Tropical print & Leather

Hi Beautiful Readers,

When the weather turns this bad just before Spring, it’s time to look forward to days when the sun comes out and warms the soul. Spring brings the hope of renewal, of nature showing us that there is a beautiful stillness after storm. In the same way, after a really dark time, whether it be mental or physical, hold onto the faith that better things are to come.

The death of funny man Robin Williams, and the reports of his depression just prior to his death, has highlighted the debilitating nature of this disease. The importance is to be aware of the symptoms, to keep an eye out for the signs and offer support. It is such an overlooked disease, affecting all ages, all cultures. As a mum to teenagers, I am particularly alert to this, having heard enough horror stories of teen suicide.

Its real.

Today’s post is aimed at brightening the mood and clothes can always lift my spirits. Floral is a big trend for Spring, and so are jumpsuits. I’ve paired this one with a lambskin jacket and my metallic heels for a festive feel.

Modestly Maxed Stripes

Hi Beautiful readers,

The Ramdaan is more than halfway done, and I am quite wistful at this beautiful time coming to an end. I really love the heightened spiritual awareness, not just my own, but of everyone around me. It’s so beautiful to see all Muslims make an effort to be better, in increased recitation and supplication to our creator. I really feel like I’ve been in a Ramadaan bubble, and having the kids home to share it with has made it so much more rewarding. We have more time for discussion and debate, they can spend more time in worship without the crazy school schedule interfering.

This last week will be less World Cup focused (which had to fit into their Ramdaan routine hehe) and more on getting ready for school- back to the daily grind indeed!

I have noticed recently that Maxi dresses with sleeves are more easily available, it’s definitely a growing trend, and oh so easy for a modest fashionista. Long sleeved maxis were already in most stores abroad during last year and I have been patiently awaiting it to hit our stores this Winter. However, the cut, style, fabric and print all need to be just right so that you don’t look frumpy. With the right accessories one can make it look trendy and on point.

Today’s outfit includes a long sleeve striped maxi I bought on a Spree Sale about two months ago. I love a good bargain, and I picked this dress up for a steal. The fabric is great with an elasticated waist, so it has a soft flow and fits well. I paired it with a denim vest and sparkly bronze Country Road pumps.
