Defying the rules

Happy Friday everyone!

April has reached an end and it seems as if this year is passing by in a flash. In fact I feel the need to hit the pause button so that I can finish all those things on my to do list. Like a pipe dream, that’s never going to happen, so it’s better to get on with it than to lament time passed.
This week I have been challenged on so many levels with my teens that I feel exhausted mentally and physically. I appreciate that my kids have their own opinions and feel comfortable justifying their viewpoints, but when it comes to discipline time, I do not need to enter into a vehement debate about it. For what seems like hours.
Debate.
Back and forth.
I have found this happening more often lately, even though we have rules and of course, consequences when rules or social boundaries have been broken. In my home the message behind rules and consequences is to make them aware from a young age that in society the same applies, if laws are broken there will be consequences (punishment). What has been happening recently is that the rules in the home are starting to evolve, out of discussion and debate, so that it can be understood and followed by the young folk. Constant communication and feedback is key, and I attempt this frequently in the crazy pace of life. To be honest, it would be easier to let it just go and not be flexible, and enforce rules without my kids being able to voice their feelings on the matter. But it would teach them that their voices are not important, it would set a precedent of following instruction without being able to contribute.
It is such a great responsibility raising children, and more importantly raising children who are kind, considerate yet able to stick their values and morals in a society where these factors are declining. There are so many instances where it would be easier to let it slide, instead of engaging in a long drawn out debate on the whys and why nots. Parenting is a full time job, a thankless daily toil where one has to be present and aware of how external factors such as society, celebrity influences, and peer interactions affect the way you parent. And what you choose to discuss, or the rules you decide on to assist them to become the best versions of themselves.
Upon reflection, I have had a difficult parenting week, because it took so much energy to constantly engage on a higher frequency, all the while trying to fulfil all my other roles. But it has been productive too, and I can see the change in my teens after a hectic lecture and debate. We’ve finally reached a cease fire where the punishment meted out was accepted without fight, attitude or even a sulk, more importantly the need for it was understood.
That in itself is progress for me.
On the topic of rules, today’s outfit is one I wore to the Mercedes Benz Bokeh South Africa International Film Festival last week. I had played around with wearing a beautiful gown from my wardrobe, and decided to be different (and defy the general rules of dressing) and wore a structured gold cocoon dress by local designer, Fortune, which I have had not an opportunity to wear yet. The weather was atrocious, wet and cold, so I accessorized and kept warm with a fur stole. A heavy turban and leather leggings finished off the outfit.

Empowering Women & an OOTD

Welcome readers,

Three weeks and counting! I’m really excited for my trip now, as documents are being finalised and I feel as if I’m squeezing the last ounces of productivity out of my brain. I think that’s normal, kind of a way of my brain getting ready to go into relax mode (which it hasn’t for a whole year..)

I’ve had another good productive week, seeing clients, running the home, taxi to kids and I even had the chance to connect with some amazing friends at yesterdays Pomegranate Lifestyle breakfast. What I find the most enjoyable and worthwhile about these events is the opportunity to network and catch up with friends at the same time. The guests are always inspirational and when I left I really felt  uplifted, I felt as if I had renewed motivation for all my plans ahead. As a woman, entrepeneur, mom and friend it gets crazy to find the time to connect all these roles which is something these mornings do for me.
The message is always to empower women, to provide opportunities for business and at the same time have a little bit of down time. I have personally felt the amazing connections made at these breakfasts and now call some of these beautiful souls friends. They inspire positive intellectual dialogue whilst offering their wealth of knowledge and experience to those who need it. I truly believe that when one is open, when you are authentic and just happy in your own skin - your interactions with everyone else is so much more meaningful.
Just concentrate on you, being you without judging others for doing the same. Everyone is unique, and has the right to be uniquely them in a world where society wants everyone to fit into a mould. I was once again reminded of this at yesterdays breakfast, and it always rings true. There is no time for gossip, backbiting and envy in a space where everyone is confident being themselves, with no judgement on others for their choices and behaviours.
Let’s rather spread love and acceptance, instead of hate and intolerance.
The world is already too full of it.

And onto today’s outfit post: I have paired a light linen longer length tunic (from last year) polka dot slim jeans and one of my favourite Zara sandals. Aside from the neckpiece, this entire outfit is from last season and still releveant. I will once again recommend, buying good quality classic pieces will lead to a wardrobe where pieces rarely date.
Happy smart, mindful shopping!

PS: today is Black Friday - so if there are any pieces you have lying in a wishlist, check them out now to see if they’re on sale!

Spring Jumpsuit Eid

Hello again readers,

It seems like this year has just started and in a flash we're in October. Even Eid seems like ages ago and my Eid OOTD feels a tad late hehe!
This time of the year, I can really feel the fatigue and this year is no exception. It has been an extremely eventful year for me (in the very best way) and I look back to a year ago with the realisation that our personal growth never stops. Finding purpose and inner peace is a journey that one travels along throughout life. I have really made some huge strides this year personally, and I aim to use what I've learnt to inspire and assist others. Most importantly, these lessons I have learnt will help me be a better person, better parent and more accepting of who I am.
When we open ourselves up to learning and improving ourselves we certainly set the best example for our kids. We teach them by example, the example that one is never done learning, that enriching and broadening our minds is the key to living life as the best version of you.

By the time Eid arrived, I had just experienced a trying week, which ended (post Eid) with a very good friend's passing the Saturday. So I had not given my outfit much thought, until I had finished my baking ritual with my youngest and food preparation towards our Eid feast. By 10h30 I was finally free to pick something out of the closet, and I had this white jumpsuit in mind which hadn't been worn. (Another Spree.co.za online sale find.) Luckily the weather was perfect for this Spring outfit, and paired with these sandals I found on sale at ZARA some time ago.
When the evening chill set in, I threw my A Sense of Style sequinned cardigan for that light Spring coverage.

First opportunity to take a couple photo...

The Cape Trend

Happy Friday readers!

We're fast approaching the middle of June, it's really unbelievable that we are half through 2015! I hope this year has gone by as planned for everyone and that you've attained those goals, I have certainly had an interesting first half and am hopeful that the rest of the year will as productive as I intend. All that aside, let's focus on the latest trend that I am totally loving. The Cape Trend or Shawl Trend, whichever item you'd like to use. It's the perfect accompaniment to complete a modest outfit, it's loose fitting (so hides some of those Winter evils), warm and so easy and comfortable to wear. It would suit most body types and can be worn casually, everyday as I have paired it here or belted over a shift with heels.

This particular shawl was bought at Monserrate, Bogota Colombia during one of hubby's business trips. It has been in my wardrobe for about 7 years and I've worn it occasionally, it's obviously been kept in good condition because of the sentimental value it has. It reminds me of hubby's trip to Bogota, and how petrified I was (for his safety), having only heard horror stories of what happens to tourists over there. I was back home, with three boys (all under the age of 10) and constantly in a state of anxiety - the time difference was inconvenient, and Skype only possible occasionally between his daytime meetings. Thinking back on it now, it's amazing how small the world has actually become, with FaceTime possible on mobile phones, WiFi available anywhere and of course social media. One can have a quick face to face chat wherever you have Internet access.

I love individual pieces which have a story attached to it, so that when I wear it there's some meaning behind the outfit and memories to go with it. Two key pieces in this outfit are from a few seasons ago, namely the denim shirt dress (about 5 years old) and the shawl. The Timberland boots were bought during my December holiday to Dubai for an amazing price- their sales are an absolute must for any bargain loving fashionista!

My outfit:

Shawl Gifted
Country Road Chambray shirt dress
Spree Ponti and faux leather leggings
Timberland boots
Leather clutch (old)
Beanie (old)

Modest Oversized OOTD

Hello again lovelies,

The crop top has been the rage all summer and since I'm more of a modest fashionista I haven't really followed the crop top trend. Until I found this oversize boxy embossed top on one of my favourite online stores, Spree. The main thing that caught my eye with this top, was not really the fact that it was a crop, but more the beautiful embossed fabric. I am a huge fan of prints, beautiful fabrics and the way they drape, so it's important to me what the fabric composition is. Which brings me to a few tips I feel will be helpful for those contemplating online shopping (locally or internationally).

One of the significant factors (for me personally) when buying online is to check the care guide to determine the quality and durability of the fabric. Since I cannot touch and feel it, I need to ensure that it is of good quality and will retain its shape after washing- its also very important that light coloured items are not only dry cleanable. This just works out way too pricey!

An additional tip, is to know your measurements in cm's, as brands sizes vary, Australian and American brands are usually bigger, and try to familiarise yourself with European vs South African sizes. I even take it a step further and measure my foot dimensions too, in the case of purchasing shoes from overseas online stores, ensuring a perfect fit.

As a fashionista, I love new trends and fashions, but I will bypass certain ones, comfortable in the fact that it will not suit me, my  body type or my personality. I tend to frequent international online stores as they are usually ahead of the trend curve. In doing so I have learnt some important lessons such as the importance of knowing your exact measurements, asking questions about the fabric, delivery lead times and whether customs is paid upfront (this is a very important question as customs duties are exceptionally high! A maximum of 54% including VAT).

A very important aspect of buying from international online stores is to ensure the reliability of the store and that you have a money back guarantee. Whilst it may very hard to return an international parcel, the reputable online stores offer a full refund and this generally will put my mind at ease when needing to make payment.

This outfit features my online purchase, which I was very impressed with since it was very well priced and the quality of the fabric was really good. It also washes and retains the shape perfectly!
I paired it with a grungy boyfriend jeans, silver sandals and a striped tank to add interest to the embossed fabric.
