Detoxing the wardobe (and life)

Welcome readers,

This week's post is a day late, with Fashion Week happening, I have been frantically working, rushing to get mommy things done with enough time to get ready for the shows. I usually don't wear serious make up, and for this event I decided to do a proper make up look.... which takes time for me. So some things (like the blog post) took a back seat, I didn't even have time to schedule it!

Last week I touched on the disasters which happened in the Cape, and as I am writing this morning, we are waiting in anticipation to hear the verdict on shows cancelled at Fashion Week due to extreme weather conditions- and whether there will even be any shows today. The wind has been blustery, blowing everything upside down including such large scale events, a stark reminder indeed that we are not in control of life.

Autumn is on the way, the sun rises later, the temperatures will soon plummet and we will need to layer clothes. This is usually the time I am called in to do a wardrobe detox, or would recommend that it be done. Read more on my wardrobe services here. As with any detox, it's a way of cleansing, whether it is the body, a detox from social media or a general detoxifying of life. In my experience of working in wardrobes, people hold onto items and pieces for various reasons, all of which are not necessarily good. Even holding onto items with the hope that one will lose weight and fit into those clothes again is not the ideal space to dwell in. The reality of weight loss, is that you will be a completely different person (inside and out) to the one who wore those items. You will not be able to relate to the 'old' you and so those clothing pieces will not reflect the new, stronger person you have become.
I usually work in wardrobes where clients need to revisit their wardrobe due to a fundamental lifestyle change, this could mean weight loss (as mentioned above), a change in career path, becoming a parent, widow or just someone who has gone through a process of healing after some traumatic incident. These events change the course of life fundamentally as essentially they empower an individual to a stronger place. During my consult we will talk about colour, styles, preferences and lifestyle, taking into account the impact that a change/adjustment in wardrobe will mean. It is not something to be ventured into on a whim, as our clothing are extensions of ourselves, in some cases it acts as armour and for others it is a vital expression of creativity.

The beauty of life is that we are constantly evolving, without noticing that as events in our lives unfold we make little tweaks here and there based on what we choose to apply to our growth. And with any change, it requires time to become a part of who we are, for us to accept, integrate and to move forward... In the same way a wardrobe detox will be something one has to be ready for- a change which will enhance your self image or at the most dramatic, alter the image you present to the world.

Today's look for me is evidence of how my daily style has evolved to suit my current lifestyle. I am no longer kitted in corporate wear every day, business suits and heels. I am able to dress as creatively as I choose, glam when required, work wear when I feel like it and athleisure for comfort.
This outfit features a black dress, raw silk bomber finished off with sneakers - perfectly relaxed for my busy mom day and chilled business meetings.

Human Image raw silk bomber

Hello 2017!

Welcome 2017!

May this year bring lots of joy, prosperity and love.
After a phenomenal vacation in frosty Paris and London, I returned exhausted from all the sightseeing, shopping, mommy duties and tour manager responsibilities. While the experience was one we will cherish forever, reliving the memories often, it is great to be home and resume 'normal' life.
I spent a lot of time with my family this holiday, an international trip forced us into close proximity for two weeks. The boys shared a hotel room for 2 weeks, we ate every single meal together, prayed together everyday, shopped, shared in experiences which weren't necessarily our own choices and made the most precious memories.
I will do a post soon on my trip, so keep an eye on the blog 😊

I don't usually do new year resolutions, as I make any changes during and after our month of fasting, so for me it's like a continuation of life after a break. There are no grand declarations of what I would like to change for 2017, and instead I will continue on my path to be a better version of me, a better wife, parent, sister, child and friend. I have found a change in the relationships within my family unit after this vacation, travelling together really improved the family dynamic. And the timing was perfect, just as my first born sets off to university, my youngest steps into the senior role at primary school and my second born, whom I've noticed, is maturing into a compassionate, responsible young man.

I am hopeful though that the new school year brings them happiness, success and the opportunities to learn in more than just academics. I am hopeful to continue being of service to others, inspire where I can, and continue on my constant journey to seek knowledge and improve in every aspect. I am mindful that I will make mistakes along the way, and will experience downs along with the ups, but I'll be prepared to learn whatever lessons I am meant to learn. My journey will consist of lots of introspection, as this is the best way to be of service, to be a better person and take in the daily blessings which cross my path each day. It is imperative for me to remember to cherish those close to me, to let them feel loved and appreciated.

I forsee another busy year ahead, with challenges as always; but I am prepared for whatever comes my way without expectations.

“We can't be afraid of change. You may feel very secure in the pond that you are in, but if you never venture out of it, you will never know that there is such a thing as an ocean, a sea. Holding onto something that is good for you now, may be the very reason why you don't have something better.”

My first lookpost of 2017 is a relaxed one, worn to spend an afternoon at a beach cafe, indicative of my view for the year ahead.  A pretty ruffle dress purchased on the Asos Black Friday Sale, so it was a good deal and the perfect colour I had been searching for. I paired it with embellished Dune flat sandals (also a sale purchase) and my newly acquired Louis Vuitton neverfull (which hubby and I queued for patiently at their Paris store) and an essential sunhat.

Aside from the splurge on the bag, every single piece in this ensemble was a sale buy, from a recent Black Friday to sales dating 3 years back. All good quality classics.

Dune sandals
Ralph Lauren sunglasses from Sunglass Hut -Bali (purchase similar here)

Boyfriend jeans OOTD

Hello again readers!

I hope this past week has been a good one, this year has started off really hectic and it doesn’t seem to show any sign of slowing down. It’s unbelievable that we’re at the end of February and I still feel like 2015 has just started.
One thing I do try, and that is to have at least one morning in the week where I take out some time for me. Whether it be a brunch with a friend, shopping and coffee with my sis or a mid week lunch date with hubby.
On this day hubby and I decided to catch lunch and enjoy a bit of the sea air while he was out of the office. Our lives as parents really revolve around the boys, it’s a rare occasion for us to be able to steal time out so we need to try and do it often. Even weekends are reserved for the kids, as teenagers they have very busy social lives, sport engagements and dad or mum has to be on stand by. I have even considered joining the corporate world again…. and then realised it would mean the return of my migraines, sleep deprivation and health issues. And I would still be doing everything I am now, including balancing my career (this does not appeal to me at ALL!)

The theme of my weekday outfits is usually comfort first, and I try to make an effort to ‘dress up’ most days and not lounge in sweats. Make up is usually not on my list, unless I am meeting someone, when I put in the extra effort with mascara and lipstick. Boyfriend jeans is a staple in my wardrobe and is perfect for comfort and modesty, whilst not looking sloppy. I have paired it with a t-shirt, and thrown a linen blazer into the mix to pull the look together. A pair of pointy pumps completes the outfit.

Outfit details:
Gap boyfriend jeans
ZARA t-shirt
Asos linen blazer
Scarf from Superbalist
ZARA studded slingbag
Mango flats (bought overseas)
Bracelets by Mimco and Honey
Giorgio Armani sunglasses from Sunglass Hut

Sentimentality and some Animal Print

Hi again readers,

As you may have noticed, my blog has been really quiet. It’s an intentional decision, for my blog has to go on a break too, and so posts will come when they come. Since its December, and kids are winding down and sport is winding down, I thought it a good idea to wind down myself before heading off on holiday.

I feel as if this year has been an exceptionally draining one, and whilst  I took measures to take care of myself, things happen and health issues arose. And thus, I feel deserving of my 10 days uninterrupted break with husby- no kids and hopefully no work mails and calls (for him).

We celebrate our anniversary tomorrow and it has been 19 whirlwind years of friendship, love, occasional fights, new experiences and literally growing up together as a couple. I am so grateful to have spent this time with my best friend, who understands me completely, knows my imperfections and accepts me as I am. What more could I ask for? And the best I can offer in return is exactly the same…..

Marriage is a merger
Of souls, of lives,
To forge new paths
With your partner
By your side,
At your back
Protecting each other from the hurts
of the World.

Thank you, my love, for sharing this rollercoaster journey with me.

This look was worn on a most enjoyable night out. I have paired a lightweight coat with skinnies and sneakers for a casual twist.

Neon Spring

Hi beautiful readers,

As I’m writing this it is storming, really storming! The wind howling is through the trees and the rain beating against the windows. It’s so far removed from this day of the lookpost, where one could fee Spring in the air, and leafy green trees showing off their new buds.

September is always such a mix of warm and cold weather, at the same time the school year is winding down into test and exam mode. Kids are looking forward to longer days of leisure and less of daily routine, more play and less slog. I am ready for longer days, beaches and picnics with the family, I feel this urgency to do all these things with my kids before the teens realise they have other interests. They have their own plans, and your only part in those plans is playing chauffeur, providing eats or cash.
As I mull over plans and upcoming weekends, I get a little more nostalgic each time, back to days when things were simpler. The kids were automatically included and were ecstatic with whatever was planned. The message to all newbie parents would be to cherish the moments, the park stops, the picnics - they pass you by in the blink of an eye!

Todays lookpost is bright, where I’ve paired a neon shirt with a white jeans and embellished flats for an easy relaxed outfit. All items are from previous seasons, and date amazingly well!

Outfit details:
Shirt and jeans and necklace from Woolworths (all previous seasons)
Wardrobe bag from Asos
ZARA embellised flats
Ackermans scarf
Rings from Asos & Lovisa
