A challenging time

Welcome lovely readers,

Wow, what a beautiful rainy Friday morning we have been blessed with in the Cape. To go to sleep with the sad news of the cabinet reshuffle; and waking up hoping it was a bad dream, just finished off another insane week on a crazy note!

2017 has brought so many challenges and obstacles on my personal path that I have become adroit at navigating around them, over them and through them. Each of these challenges helping me understand a little more about myself and my abilities. One day it can feel as if the world is literally crashing down around me, and after some introspection and prayer, I am able to turn around and face things head on. The biggest hurdle this year has been re-examining parenting; raising three teenagers in a world which is significantly different to the one I grew up in, is a mammoth task. Each day I learn a little more from these young men, and with my youngest who turned 13 this week, new boundaries had to be negotiated (again).  For me parenting is a constant negotiation of boundaries, rules and evolving the family unit to be safe and stable in an ever changing environment.

I suppose the dynamic, fast paced world necessitates a constant negotiation of boundaries, for oneself as well as for the youth. It necessitates constant personal growth, to be able to function effectively in a society where things change overnight. From one moment to the next, things change in a heartbeat, like the tanking of our currency when recalling our Finance Minister, or reshuffling an entire cabinet, or the tragic death of a struggle stalwart, Ahmed Kathrada. And while these occurrences provoke anger, rage and the sense of injustice, it is also a time for reflection and the presence of mind to know that we need to deal with the present, the here and now. Ahmed Kathrada (like so many others) is an icon, a figure to be revered and learnt from, but our focus should be on the future, and being able to nurture such character and values in the present and next generations' leaders. And in the same way that I have had to address some really harsh circumstances this year, I feel as if the country is in the same way having to weather this new landscape, with the view to coming out stronger, with new leadership on the other side.

In light of all upheaval happening around us, the droughts and fires, politics, school beatings and killings and kids going missing, it is apparent that we have to create safe spaces for our kids to just be. Societal pressures are hectic, superficial habits are applauded and intelligence and values placed on the back burner. As I have had to learn through challenges, the youth too will have to weather these difficulties, maintaining their sense of self with their confidence and self esteem intact. I trust and have faith that it is indeed possible.

Today's look is an ethereal one, light pastels with tulle and nudes to reflect my inner child. It echoes my hopeful thoughts and faith that things will turn out as they should.
That I need to trust and fulfill my purpose in a greater plan.

The ZARA is a peachy nude silk top with tulle, paired with a skinny jeans and leopard print heels to add some edge for a work meeting.

Glam the Dress24 Way

Happy Friday Dear Readers!

Yesterday I participated in a launch were I introduced my wardrobe consulting with a local designer and it was quite an emotional moment for me. The idea that amazing women- the designer (more about this will be shared in another post) and marketer were open to promoting me selflessly was really heartwarming.
The fact that they welcomed me without question and trusted that I had the same vision as them is special and so rare to find that I am really grateful to have met such inspiring women. It brings to mind the importance of empowering fellow female entrepreneurs, as it is with a combined sense of purpose that we can rejoice in one another's successes.
Celebrate each others successes.
Help each other out in times of need.
And be there as a shoulder to cry on when things get rough.

With Eid less than a week away, matric balls on the horizon and wedding season fast approaching , I introduce Dress24. A business owned by a fellow female entrepreneur who imports the most exquisite evening gowns. After having had difficulty sourcing a dress for a family wedding she decided to bring in these  evening dresses, which cater for everyone, from the "pint-sized" fashionista to expectant mommies. The gowns are all runway inspired, by the likes of Valentino, Naeem Khan and Zuhair Murad. The detail is gorgeous, bead work the best quality and they can even add that sleeve or slip to make it more modest.  You are able to browse the online store from the comfort of your home and measurements of the dresses are readily available to ensure the perfect fit.
Today's featured dress is one I've been coveting since seeing it on Instagram and the actual dress is every bit as beautiful as I imagined it. Give them a follow as she runs specials and discounts on the Instagram page.  Regular readers will know my love for sequins, and this column dress is covered in sequins, with a beaded mesh overlay. For an extra dramatic effect, it has a flowing train (mine has been shortened quite a bit). Since the mesh was a bit transparent at the top, I added a mesh undergarment for added coverage, it worked perfectly!

Dress24 has generously offered a 10% discount to all RuBe's Closet readers, just enter the code "RUBERELOADED" on checkout. So, if you have that family wedding you just have to look drop dead gorgeous for, your own engagement, or an upcoming matric ball of a family member, share this deal!

My Outfit:

Nine West heels
Clutch purchased on a cruise ship
Honey earrings

Classic Black Glam OOTD

Happy Friday readers!

This week has brought the cold in all its Winter glory, and all the warm coats and boots have surfaced from storage. Time to sort out the closet and donate those unused items, Winter is a time when the homeless and destitute really suffer, so get donating if you haven't yet...

Black is a classic and a basic in everyones closet, it is versatile, glam, slimming and suits all skin tones. In the process of sorting my closet for Winter OOTD's, I am happy to say that almost all my Winter purchases (aside from lower priced trendy pieces) from last season will be wearable into the new season. I generally invest in good quality classic boots, as a result I have several pairs which I am happy to take into this Winter. At the end of Winter last year, when all the stores were selling out their Winter stock to make way for the new Spring/Summer stock, I pounced. All items which are classics and good quality and well priced were dropped into the cart immediately!
I believe in buying good quality pieces that don't date easily and can be carried through several seasons. Those fads and trendy pieces, can then be incorporated with lower priced items which won't break the bank. However, I stick to leather with my Winter Boots, so that a good pair usually lasts a few years, also ensuring that they always look good.

Today's lookpost is comprised entirely of classics that have been in my closet for years; hauled out for a wedding which I clearly didn't need to shop for.

I've paired a black embellished crossover dress (around 7 years old), with a faux fur stole bought two years ago (before faux fur made the trend list), a glittery lace shawl worn as a scarf, and a pair of nude heels which have been in my closet for more than 4 years.....  The underskirt is a DIY job, and can be made longer for a more covered modest look. Some serious oldies out for a spin. The only recent purchase is the crystal neck piece bought on sale at Lovisa a few weeks back.

Outfit details:
Black dress (bought so long ago I can't remember the store)
Faux fur stole from Long Street
Gifted Lace scarf
Bag bought abroad few years back
Nine West nude heels
Lovisa crystal neckpiece
Falke stockings
Underskirt and top DIY

Tropical Valentines Print

Hey lovelies!

Hubby & I don’t really go all out for Valentine’s Day, and we just kind of let it happen. We may do small token gestures on the day depending on our hectic parental schedules. To those of you who celebrate, may it be a special day filled with lots of love!

While out shooting this lookpost, I thought it would be fitting to make this my Valentine post. Amina and I took a drive to Ardene Gardens (more commonly known as Claremont Gardens) which is where my wedding photos were taken over 19 years ago!! Sheesh, has it really been that long ago?

I have really taken to tropical prints this season, and beautiful colours as they make me feel happy and summery. This skirt is made of lightweight chiffon, which gives the floating effect, perfectly fitting for a scorcher as the day turned out to be.

I can’t let Valentines Day pass me by without expressing some form of cheesy sentiment for my Valentine.

‘My dear Valentine,
It seems like yesterday that you glanced into my eyes,
Like yesterday that you swept me off my feet.
Your gentle manner and constant romance,
Your sense of humour and grace,
Is the reason we’ve weathered many seasons together.
Happy valentines day, my love.”

And we will probably pass the baton of celebrating V-day over to the teens in the household (heaven help us!)

There was no way I could pose in this tree with heels!
Who doesn’t have wedding photos taken by the infamous tree?

And lets don those heels now!

Outfit details:
ZARA T-shirt
Zando maxi skirt
Country Road belt
Nine West shoes
